DetailsI made a mold using a two part process of a convoluted leaf of the acanthus making this our most 3 dimensional lid. The giant leaves of the acanthus have been used in design for centuries but this is a contemporary interpretation. This is actually the reverse of the leaf so that the deep veins would take the darker patina and the raised areas could be highlighted. Sometimes the mold making process is a two or three step affair. Since many items are too delicate to make good impressions we use a couple of tricks to get the desired result. On a number of items featuring leaves we like to emphasize the veins by showing them in the negative rather than the positive. And with others like the kelp we end up making rubber kelp because in its natural state it is too wet and slippery to press into the clay.
